Winlink System Rolling Out Password Requirements
The Winlink Development Team has announced that all connections to the Winlink system via any means (internet, telnet, VHF packet, any HF Mode) will require a secure connection after a six-month phase-in period. To have a secure connection, users will be required to enter a password, which was not previously a requirement on some connection modes. To set or change your password, please visit www.winlink.org and click on "My Account" in the upper left.
The development team has also released the following procedure for connecting to a VHF packet RMS Gateway via a "Dumb Terminal" such as HyperTerm, PuTTY, and/or a Terminal Emulator in Linux.
"To login with 'secure login' using keyboard mode, send "PW" followed by your Winlink password (ex., PW ABC123). This must be performed before you can use any of the normal keyboard commands. Your session will expire after approximately 2 hours. You can use the B or BYE command to logout sooner. Help is available from the telnet server by typing H for a list of commands."
All Colorado ARES R3D2 members are encouraged to have an account on the Winlink system with a password you can remember. Even if you do not own a Windows computer (or the hardware needed for VHF packet or HF sound card digital modes), the equipment may be available at a location you may be deployed to. If you have an account of your own, it greatly opens our options for staffing that location.
Region 3 District 2 covers Larimer and Weld counties in Northern Colorado. We are in the Northeast All Hazards Region. For full details on how ARES is organized in Colorado, visit the state's region/district page.
